April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. The high co-occurrence of child abuse and domestic violence is undisputed. Further, even witnessing domestic violence leads children to exhibit symptoms and behaviors that mimic those who have been physically abused themselves.
The Facts*:
- Witnessing violence between one’s parents or caretakers is the strongest risk factor of transmitting violent behavior from one generation to the next.
- Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults
- 30% to 60% of perpetrators of intimate partner violence also abuse children in the household.
The most important element to help children progress in a positive way despite their history of/exposure to abuse, is a strong and nurturing relationship with a nonviolent parent. So this month, we’re focused on promoting the nurturing of children in our communities: Create a Nurturing Children Pinwheel!
