Why do we need culturally specific services for Black women survivors? A history of violence against Black women in the United States, Black Women domestic violence and sexual assault (DV/SA) survivors’ unique contemporary needs, and culturally specific responses.

This workshop will discuss why culturally specific services for black women survivors of gender-based violence are needed. Ms. Brown will describe how to go about developing programing that effectively addresses the negative impact on black women who sit at the problematic intersection of gender-based violence, race/ethnicity, and social-economic status. A history of black women’s experience of violence in the U.S., contemporary concerns of survivors, and cultural responsiveness will be examined.
