SUMMARY:Brown Bag: CREATING ALTERNATIVES TO THE CRIMINAL/LEGAL SYSTEM THROUGH COMMUNITY-BASED RESPONSES TO VIOLENCE
DESCRIPTION:Join SOL’s Lynne Sprague as she discusses: \nAdvocates of community-based alternative to violence assume that the relationships\, families and communities in which violence occurs are also the very locations for long-term change and transformation. We know that friends\, family\, and community know most intimately the conditions that lead to violence as well as the values and strengths which can lead to its transformation.  Knowing that involvement in the criminal justice system can be more harmful for some survivors and families\, we seek to build a community that has viable solutions outside of the criminal justice system. Come hear about a local community-based accountability project that has been underway for over a year in the Denver-metro area.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag: Human Trafficking for Service Providers
DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking is an issue that we are growing in awareness around; however\, domestic and sexual violence advocates have been serving trafficking survivors long before the current focus on the issue has become en vogue. The victimization of trafficking survivors\, both labor and sex\, co-occur with the sexual\, physical and/ or emotional violence experienced by domestic and sexual violence survivors. Traffickers are often romantic partners\, family members or caretakers and utilize the same tactics as domestic and sexual abusers to main power and control. Unfortunately\, information about trafficking and resources for trafficking survivors has often not been disseminated to those doing working in domestic and sexual violence. \nJoin Michele Reimer\, Human Trafficking Program Manager for COVA\, for a presentation that explores the intersections of human trafficking\, domestic and sexual violence. Attendees will learn how trafficking is defined by the federal government\, red flags for human trafficking among those receiving services for domestic and sexual violence and what advocacy support and additional resources may be offered to the human trafficking survivors you serve.

SUMMARY:Violence Free Colorado's Brown Bag Series #12
DESCRIPTION:Keeping it Simple: Promising Practices in Shelter Rule Reduction \nShelter rules and guidelines… a topic frequently revisited and yet can seem continuously difficult to manage. As noted in the VAWnet ‘Conflict Resolution Tools for Domestic Violence Shelter Staff’\, “Shelter advocates themselves may feel that the lines between structures and rules designed originally to be protective and those that are unnecessarily restrictive have become blurred. Fortunately\, an increasing number of domestic violence programs have initiated internal critiques of their shelter rules and structures\, examining the extent to which they compromise rather than support the empowerment of residents and designing alternative approaches.” \nThis discussion\, led by Beth Collin\, will provide time for peer-to-peer dialogue about critically re-examining shelter rules\, considering rule-reduction initiatives\, and whether shelter staff feel equipped to manage communal housing conflicts without replicating power-over and controlling dynamics. \nClick Here to Register \nEach month of 2015\, you are invited to join Violence Free Colorado staff and experts from advocacy organizations around the state for a Brown Bag conversation!  \nWe hope you’ll join us! \nFor more information\, please contact Beth Collins: ecollins(at)violencefreeco.org

SUMMARY:Colorado Advocacy in Action Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Colorado Advocacy in Action Conference is co-hosted annually by Violence Free Colorado (Violence Free Colorado) and the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CCASA). The Coalitions collaborate on this event in order to provide training and education that is based on best and promising practices for addressing sexual and domestic violence\, and to ensure that services for survivors are as consistent and comprehensive as possible. Colorado Advocacy in Action is the only statewide conference specific to domestic violence\, sexual assault\, stalking\, and dating violence advocacy and is intended for victim service providers as well as affiliated professionals. We hope it also provides an opportunity for advocates in the sexual and domestic violence field to connect with their counterparts and build a collective voice to further our work to end sexual and domestic violence in Colorado.

SUMMARY:Violence Free Colorado's Brown Bag Discussion #6: Batterer Typologies
DESCRIPTION:There is an urgent need to intervene with people who use abusive behaviors with their intimate partners given the tremendous emotional\, physical\, and financial harm which results from their actions. Efforts by professionals to better understand\, identify\, and intervene with these men are appropriate\, timely\, and important. Research that typologizes batterers (domestic violence offenders) was introduced in the late 1970’s by a few pioneering researchers and has continued to evolve. While the efficacy of a sub-type classification approach to batterer intervention continues to be debated\, its popularity is on the rise. Join us for a discussion with national and state experts to talk about recently emerged qualitative subtyping of batterers\, addresses concerns that have been raised about the methodology relative to its application in Colorado’s domestic violence offender management\, victim advocacy\, and victim services\, and get recommendations for those doing the work in the field. \nRegister!

SUMMARY:Violence Free Colorado's Brown Bag Series #5: CCR
DESCRIPTION:This will be the 5th installment of Violence Free Colorado’s monthly BROWN BAG Teleconference Series! Each month of 2015\, you are invited to join Violence Free Colorado staff and experts from advocacy organizations around the state for a Brown Bag conversation!  \nWhether you already have a multi-agency team\, have a team that is struggling\, or are thinking about starting one this discussion can help clarify the process a CCR team uses.  The CCR team process is a tool used by interdisciplinary groups and domestic violence advocacy organizations to further their common goals of enhancing safety and ensuring accountability when intervening in cases involving intimate partner violence.  Its premise is that workers are institutionally organized to do their jobs in particular ways—they are guided to do jobs by the forms\, policies\, philosophy\, and routine work practices of the institution in which they work. When these work practices routinely fail to adequately address the needs of people it is rarely because of the failure of individual practitioners. It is a problem with how their work is organized and coordinated. A CCR team is designed to allow interagency partners discover how problems are produced in the structure of case processing and management. We encourage questions on how utilizing this approach would work for your organization and how you can start the process of initiating a CCR in your community. \nClick here to register! \n

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Series #3: Advocate Initiated Response
DESCRIPTION:Advocacy Initiated Response (AIR):\nAlthough many of our member domestic violence programs are already utilizing this approach\, many are just now looking at how an advocacy initiated approach can increase safety and services for domestic violence victims. Understanding that at the first sign of conflict in the home\, the immediate involvement of community based advocates can be crucial to preventing future injury creates a shift in how that initial victim contact occurs. Please join us for this discussion. We encourage questions on how this approach changes organizational structure\, how AIR would work for your organization\, and how you might start initiating an advocacy initiated response in your organization. \nThis will be the 3rd installment of Violence Free Colorado’s monthly BROWN BAG Teleconference Series! Each month of 2015\, you are invited to join Violence Free Colorado staff and experts from advocacy organizations around the state for a Brown Bag conversation!  \nWe hope you’ll join us! \nFor more information\, please contact Jacque Morse: jmorse(at)violencefreeco.org
