SUMMARY:Private Violence: Nationwide Living Room Screenings
DESCRIPTION:Simultaneous screenings for the broadcast of Private Violence on October 20th. \nPrivate Violence shines a bright light on the public costs of “private” violence. Through the eyes of two survivors – Deanna Walters\, a mother who seeks justice for the crimes committed against her at the hands of her estranged husband\, and Kit Gruelle\, an advocate who seeks justice for all women – we bear witness to the complicated and complex realities of intimate partner violence. Their experiences challenge entrenched and misleading assumptions\, providing a lens into a world that is largely invisible; a world we have locked behind closed doors with our silence\, our laws\, and our lack of understanding. \nHBO will broadcast Private Violence on October 20\, 2014\, during Domestic Violence Prevention Month\, and the Private Violence team is working together with HBO to organize a national\, simultaneous viewing on premiere night. The film premiered at Sundance\, screened at the True/False Film Festival (True Life Fund recipient)\, Dallas International Film Festival (winner\, Silver Heart Award)\, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival (winner\, Human Rights Award)\, DOXA and Documentary Edge in New Zealand. It had its international premiere at Hot Docs in Toronto and opened the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in New York City. \nEach committed house party will receive a digital packet of resources to help them organize their house party and facilitate follow-up discussion. \nAre you interested in hosting? SUMMARY:Voices: A Night of Community\, Love\, and Empowerment
DESCRIPTION:Voices is a collaborative event co-programed by Kappa Phi Lambda\, University of Denver Center of Advocacy\, Prevention\, and Empowerment\, Fortitude Foundation\, and SafeHouse Denver. Voices strives to honor those who have been affected by domestic violence by a two part comprehensive event. The first of which includes two workshops based on spoken word and healing or spoken word and gendered violence. We are flying out Ollie Schminkey from Button Poetry in Minnesota to teach\, so that will be a great workshop! We will also have an art show that includes an art gallery and performances. All artists and performers have been working on their pieces for a while- specializing in oil paintings\, photography\, dancing\, music\, etc. They were given the Voices Stories Packet which was created by survivors of domestic violence from SafeHouse Denver chronicling their healing journey. Artists were then asked to draw inspiration from these survivors and we are incredibly excited to present their work! Additionally\, we will be presenting pieces created by women and children currently at SafeHouse Denver. \nThe event is held on Saturday\, October 25th from 4-9 pm at the University of Denver. The workshops will be held 4-5 pm in Sturm Hall and the art show will be in the Special Events Room in the library from 6-8 pm (the performances start at 7:30). The art show is $7 presale and $10 at the door (all proceeds go to SafeHouse Denver). Workshops are free but space is limited!
