SUMMARY:Lethality Assessment Protocol Training
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about this innovative approach with us. The lethality assessment protocol (LAP) is a collaborative tool used in domestic violence cases to immediately get the victim in touch with domestic violence victim advocate services and counseling. The immediacy of that contact has been shown to dramatically reduce risk of homicide or serious injury to the victim in the future. \nThe LAP has been in used in Johnson County\, KS since 2011 and since then\, Johnson County saw its intimate partner homicide rate drop from \n5 in 2011 to 1 in 2013. It has been nearly two years since the last intimate partner homicide. Two members of the Johnson County team will be presenting at the training.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: "Making a Killing: Guns\, Greed\, and the NRA"
DESCRIPTION:Tickets are now available at www.bravenewfilms.org/dfs to see the national premiere of Making a Killing: Guns\, Greed and the NRA on March 22 that Violence Free Colorado is co-sponsoring with the Denver Film Society and four other gun violence prevention organizations. \nThis is a major opportunity to raise awareness about the high price our society pays for the huge profits amassed by gun manufacturers through their political arm\, the NRA.   Given the high demand for these tickets and to promote a mix of advocates and potential new supporters\, ticket purchases are limited to 4 tickets per transaction.   We encourage our members to bring their partner and a couple of new supporters to the viewing.  We expect the film to sell-out\, but there will be opportunities to show it at your congregation\, organizational meeting or house party by going to  http://www.bravenewfilms.org/mak_organize \nMembers of sponsoring organizations can order tickets at the special rate of $6/ticket…contact Amy Pohl (apohl(at)violencefreeco.org) for more info. \nMaking A Killing\, Denver Premier

SUMMARY:Brown Bag: Advocacy Essentials
DESCRIPTION:Advocacy Essentials \nSafety and well-being of survivors and their children depends on foundational touchstones which over time have shown to work successfully. What are the essential qualities\, skills\, and knowledge?  \nThe vision of one day living in a peaceful and equal (rape free\, abuse free) society is possible with sustainable leadership\, a partnership with directors and advocates and survivors. What are the factors of longevity in the work and how do we achieve those through Advocacy Essentials?  \nWe know that community-based sexual and domestic violence response advocates change lives and offer transformational partnership with survivors and their children. Join Violence Free Colorado’s Kristiana Huitrón and Jacque Morse as we identify what leaders in the field who joined the work as survivors\, advocates or both\, have to say about the bare essentials for advocacy and how to build staff training and education that serves all parties through empowerment.  \n

SUMMARY:Brown Bag: Human Trafficking for Service Providers
DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking is an issue that we are growing in awareness around; however\, domestic and sexual violence advocates have been serving trafficking survivors long before the current focus on the issue has become en vogue. The victimization of trafficking survivors\, both labor and sex\, co-occur with the sexual\, physical and/ or emotional violence experienced by domestic and sexual violence survivors. Traffickers are often romantic partners\, family members or caretakers and utilize the same tactics as domestic and sexual abusers to main power and control. Unfortunately\, information about trafficking and resources for trafficking survivors has often not been disseminated to those doing working in domestic and sexual violence. \nJoin Michele Reimer\, Human Trafficking Program Manager for COVA\, for a presentation that explores the intersections of human trafficking\, domestic and sexual violence. Attendees will learn how trafficking is defined by the federal government\, red flags for human trafficking among those receiving services for domestic and sexual violence and what advocacy support and additional resources may be offered to the human trafficking survivors you serve.

Trans-specific research will highlight prevalence data\, barriers to accessing services\, as well as some of the unique challenges transgender survivors face. Data will also guide discussion on how providers and systems can lower barriers and integrate effective strategies to better serve transgender survivors and loved ones. A review of trans-inclusive federal legislation and advancements will provide information on both federal mandates to provide services and\, more importantly\, connect the dots for attendees on how these federal advancements can improve the safety and health of the transgender survivors they work with. \n$75 regular\, $35 student\, $50 live stream

SUMMARY:Brown Bag: CREATING ALTERNATIVES TO THE CRIMINAL/LEGAL SYSTEM THROUGH COMMUNITY-BASED RESPONSES TO VIOLENCE
DESCRIPTION:Join SOL’s Lynne Sprague as she discusses: \nAdvocates of community-based alternative to violence assume that the relationships\, families and communities in which violence occurs are also the very locations for long-term change and transformation. We know that friends\, family\, and community know most intimately the conditions that lead to violence as well as the values and strengths which can lead to its transformation.  Knowing that involvement in the criminal justice system can be more harmful for some survivors and families\, we seek to build a community that has viable solutions outside of the criminal justice system. Come hear about a local community-based accountability project that has been underway for over a year in the Denver-metro area.
