SUMMARY:Beyond the Safety Pin: #JaggedJustice Post-Election Accountability & Action
DESCRIPTION:A call has been made for people who want to express support for the African-American/Black\, Latinx\, Muslim\, LGBTQ\, and other marginalized communities experiencing high levels of fear during these uncertain times\, to wear a safety pin to demonstrate that tartgeted commuities are “safe” in their presence. While this is a show of solidarity\, is it enough? \nThis workshop will examine post-election backlash and the actions and reactions to race\, gender\, immigration\, sovereignty and other issues causing a broad range of concerns and responses to what the Women of Color Network\, Inc. (WOCN\, Inc.) has defined as “#JaggedJustice.” \n#JaggedJustice seeks to galvanize a collective voice in solidarity with those who have lost their lives\, and with survivors of individual and collective acts of violence. Presenters will guide participants in connecting the dots between issues of oppression and the experiences of survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The concept of becoming an aspiring ally\, options for providing victim support\, and other strategies for resistance and change will be explored. \nRegular – $75\, Student – $35\, Live Stream – $50 \nLocation: \nLawrence Street Center \n1380 Lawrence Street \nTerrace Room (2nd Floor) \nDenver\, CO 80204

SUMMARY:Bringing Meaning to Tragedy: A Colorado Family's Story
DESCRIPTION:In February of 2011\, two Colorado families experienced the worst of tragedies stemming from years of domestic violence. In a murder-for-hire plot\, Amara Wells and Bob Rafferty lost their lives. \nEventually\, four arrests were made and four sentences were imposed. As seen on ABC’s 20/20\, this presentation will cover the police investigation\, the role of the judicial system\, and what survival looks like in the midst of chaos. Come hear the powerful\, and ultimately hopeful\, story in an effort to further advance the policies and services surrounding domestic violence and victim’s rights. Please join us for a compelling evening\, proving that it is possible to find meaning and purpose in the face of terrible tragedy. \n

SUMMARY:Free Community Film Screening: 'Private Violence'
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Alliance Against Domestic Abuse and Project Sellars Space as we bring a FREE screening of the film\, ‘Private Violence’. \nAn official selection at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014\, ‘Private Violence’ explores a simple\, but deeply disturbing fact of American life: the most dangerous place for a woman in America is her own home. \nThis film immerses us in the lives of several women as they attempt to leave their abusers\, setting them on a collision course with institutions that continuously and systematically fail them\, often blaming victims for the violence they hope to fell. As the victims transform from victim to survivor\, ‘Private Violence’ begins to shape powerful\, new questions that hold the potential to change our society: “Why does he abuse?” “Why do we turn away?” “How do we begin to build a future without domestic violence?” \nCheck out the trailer for the film here: \nhttp://www.privateviolence.com/index.html#trailer \nDonations accepted at the door. SUMMARY:Brown Bag: CREATING ALTERNATIVES TO THE CRIMINAL/LEGAL SYSTEM THROUGH COMMUNITY-BASED RESPONSES TO VIOLENCE
DESCRIPTION:Join SOL’s Lynne Sprague as she discusses: \nAdvocates of community-based alternative to violence assume that the relationships\, families and communities in which violence occurs are also the very locations for long-term change and transformation. We know that friends\, family\, and community know most intimately the conditions that lead to violence as well as the values and strengths which can lead to its transformation.  Knowing that involvement in the criminal justice system can be more harmful for some survivors and families\, we seek to build a community that has viable solutions outside of the criminal justice system. Come hear about a local community-based accountability project that has been underway for over a year in the Denver-metro area.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag: Human Trafficking for Service Providers
DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking is an issue that we are growing in awareness around; however\, domestic and sexual violence advocates have been serving trafficking survivors long before the current focus on the issue has become en vogue. The victimization of trafficking survivors\, both labor and sex\, co-occur with the sexual\, physical and/ or emotional violence experienced by domestic and sexual violence survivors. Traffickers are often romantic partners\, family members or caretakers and utilize the same tactics as domestic and sexual abusers to main power and control. Unfortunately\, information about trafficking and resources for trafficking survivors has often not been disseminated to those doing working in domestic and sexual violence. \nJoin Michele Reimer\, Human Trafficking Program Manager for COVA\, for a presentation that explores the intersections of human trafficking\, domestic and sexual violence. Attendees will learn how trafficking is defined by the federal government\, red flags for human trafficking among those receiving services for domestic and sexual violence and what advocacy support and additional resources may be offered to the human trafficking survivors you serve.
